These deserts have probably been occupied for the past 12,000 years and the traces of the oldest inhabitants can be seen in the form of rock writing called pictographs as well as in cliff and surface dwellings. Unlike the native peoples of other desert regions, the native Americans have in many ways adapted to the conveniences of modern-day society.
